Vision for the Future of Water Supply in Kansas

Governor Sam Brownback Issued a Call to Action for a Vision for the

Future of Water in Kansas at the Recent Governor's Conference on Water
Kansas Water Priorities Must Be Addressed to Meet State's Current and Future Needs

Governor Brownback charged his administration, including the Kansas Water Office, Kansas Department of Agriculture, and Kansas Water Authority, along with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, and Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, to lead the vision and called upon the Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors to engage in the planning since water and the economy are closely linked.Cube

The Vision

The Vision will take the Kansas Water Plan to a whole new level with more intense work with government, cities and counties, the groundwater management districts, water assurance districts, industry and stakeholders to develop this vision and area specific goals for ensuring a reliable water supply for Kansas citizens.

Over the next six months, the Visioning Team will be conducting coordinated outreach with many stakeholders throughout the state representing all uses of water. Feedback gained from these stakeholder meetings will serve as the basis of the draft Vision for the Future of Water in Kansas.

Stakeholder outreach will also make use of existing committees to the Kansas Water Authority including Basin Advisory Committees, Ogallala Aquifer Advisory Committee, Reservoir Advisory Committee and the Kansas Aqueduct Stakeholder Committee.

Regional Goal Setting

A guiding principle of the Vision is that locally driven solutions have the highest opportunity for long-term success. With that in mind, the Vision outlines a process for water supply goals to be established by regions by stakeholders as a means for measuring success and implementing the Vision. A Regional Goal Leadership Team consisting of 9 to 11 individuals per region has been identified by the Kansas Water Authority to represent 14 planning areas (Map). The role of each team is to participate in a public scoping process in their region, develop draft goals for their region based on public input and available resource condition information and present the draft goals to the Kansas Water Authority. A list of each individual serving on a Regional Goal Leadership Team is listed here.
